In short: Hell in Buddhism is not a permanent destination of eternal damnation; but rather hell in Buddhism is a place where karmic debt is burned off until such that the sufferer can be reborn into another realm.

(In other words if you fail the karma check, it is not the one only possibility that you will be reborn into Earth again to suffer, another possibility is you are reborn into one of several other hells, other more hellish hells, to suffer even more before perhaps being reborn into Earth as a human. If you're uh, "lucky".)

And yes you can spend thousands of years or thousands of millenia in (each) hell, according to tradition.
