In this state, not being able to recognise damage means they have a greater capacity for inflicting it as a simple, unseen, uncontrolled by-product of their behaviour.
Now imagine parents damaged in this way damaging their children.
Now extend this back through generations.
How we arrived at the world we have now makes a lot more sense, doesn't it?

Once you understand this the world makes MUCH more sense. A horrific kind of sense but sense nonetheless.
