I’m thankful for the opportunity to spend spring break volunteering for Oceana in Washington D.C.
I am also apparently a giant person.

This week I learned that if your elephant has a baby, and the baby elephant is auspicious - a white or black elephant - you have to offer the baby to the monarch. You’re rewarded, of course.

I’m working on a comparative paper about animal-focused tourism.
Today I learned that the Koala was listed as endangered in February 2022.
I did not realize the Koala was only recently listed. I was under the impression it had been listed some time ago, but that was only threatened status.

I think we're going to have to create a standard for AIS/VMS and make an accurate signal part of the Law of the Sea as a crime of universal jurisdiction.
It would have a dramatic effect on policing IUU fishing, and it's going to become quite necessary as vessel automation becomes more pervasive.
(Imagine a Tesla on autopilot, except its a 80,000-ton Panamax tanker on the high seas.)

I took a class this semester on IUU fishing so wanted to do a primer thread and give some further sources.
IUU fishing is a problem at the intersection of maritime law and international law, that isn't on the radar of the general public.
It's also likely to be the cause of conflict because it threatens food security and national security for a number of nations around the globe. 1/x
