In order to fly, bats have extremely efficient circulatory systems — both their arteries and veins contract to pump blood through the body (in most creatures only arteries contract)

Additionally, bats are some of the only mammals that exchange oxygen (that is, breathe) directly through their skin

The Little Red Flying Fox is found exclusively in Australia, but within their range are highly nomic. They feed almost exclusively on eucalypts and melaleucas blossoms and nector, and will follow where they are blossoming.

This lil cutie is a Madagascar Sucker-Footed Bat -- see its little disc-shaped feet?

Despite its name, this bat does not actually use suction to stick to leaves; it creates wet adhesion by secreting a "sweat-like" liquid. They use this adhesion to live on the leaves of the traveller's palm, which are *SO* smooth that parasites are unable to get to the bats

Very roughly, bats are divided into megabat and microbat categories. Megabats are bigger, tend to have bigger eyes and fox-like faces, and mostly eat fruit. Microbats have smaller eyes, more complex noses and ear shapes, and mostly eat insects!

New Zealand's *only* native land mammals are both bats!

The Pekapeka-tou-roa, or Long-Tailed Wattle bat won NZ Bird of the Year in 2021 💜

The other is the NZ Lesser Short -Tailed bat, whose Greater cousin went extinct sometime after 1965
