The officer hesitated and left.
It was a temporary salvation. My grandfather knew they’ll be back and eventually come to take him as well. One night he just left.
He deserted and ran away with nothing but uniforms and a soldier certificate, not even shoes.
He walked on the snow with bare feet all the way to way to Ukraine to, ironically, find a sanctuary.

Today on #InternationalHolocaustMemorialDay, I remember the 6 million Jews, including members of my own extended family, who were killed in the Nazi Genocide.
I also remember the other victims of that Genocide against those they considered sub-human, Gypsies, Gays, Disabled, and others.
However Genocides have happened since in Bosnia, in Rwanda, in Myamar, in China, where people are considered not worth living simply because of their ancestry or characteristics they gave no control over.
