It feels apt to share this on #InternationalMotherLanguageDay. While creating this workshop I've learned so much about my own experiences communicating in multiple languages. I also found many excellent resources from a community dedicated to speakers of languages other than English.
I'm grateful to ComSciCon Atlanta for the invitation and impetus to think more deeply about #LanguageBarriers and #accessibility in #SciComm 🗨️

Because of that, I had the benefit of getting to do my education in a language I spoke at home and understood, right from kindergarten on.

60% of the global population does not currently have that benefit.

Unsurprisingly, the English come last in the rankings of those able to speak a language other than their mother tongue. But I have to say that 34% seems rather high, given the English propensity for exceptionalism. Being able to shout "Dos beeros, porfavore!" surely doesn't count as linguistic ability.
