RT from Horniman Museum and Gardens (@HornimanMuseum)
In the early 1890s, Frederick Horniman bought a polar bear to sit in the Natural History Gallery.
It was a popular exhibit for over 60 years.
Since then, the fate of our once star polar bear has been a mystery. ๐

As prompted by @art_history_animalia - did you know today is #InternationalPolarBearDay? My contribution is somewhat newer (and arguably not as well preserved!). #Canada, have featured a polar bear on the $2 coin since 1996. Here is an example from that first year.

More for #InternationalPolarBearDay: An example of Ditmar Urbach's ceramic polar bear ashtrays from #Czechoslovakia, c.1930s. These were made to commemorate Nora, the first polar bear at
the Prague Zoo, who arrived from the Karlas Circus in 1932.

Oh, how time flies watching Hudson grow up! Today is #InternationalPolarBearDay and we're celebrating the handsome Hudson. Polar bears are vulnerable in the wild. When you adopt Hudson, you contribute to his care at BZ & polar bear conservation worldwide! http://CZS.org/Hudson
Today is #InternationalPolarBearDay. Not a cause for a celebration, as the species is so imperiled by climate change. We were fortunate to see these ones in Kaktovik, #Alaska, where they barely subsist on the remains of whale carcasses while waiting for the sea ice to freeze so they can hunt seals. Sadly, the ice is freezing later and later every decade.

Today is #InternationalPolarBearDay so I'm posting a portrait of one of these lovely and endangered animals that I did in soft pastel on a textured paper a few years ago. I really hope these creatures will survive the changes our climate is facing.
This artwork may be seen in my online gallery at https://mm-anderson.pixels.com/featured/polar-bear-with-aurora-mm-anderson.html or one of the other sites in my profile.

It's #InternationalPolarBearDay, so we just had to return to this gorgeous piece from @HGold_author@twitter.com about her gorgeous book The Last Bear - and how she hopes it will inspire children to protect our planet: https://www.booktrust.org.uk/news-and-features/features/2021/november/there-is-something-incredibly-special-about-a-polar-bear-the-last-bear-author-hannah-gold-on-the-incredible-beasts-that-inspired-her-book/

Polar bears depend on sea ice to be able to feed, but a trend towards warmer spring and autumn months is reducing their feeding season, threatening their very survival. To raise awareness of their plight, today has been designated #InternationalPolarBearDay.
The skin of a polar bear under its white fur is black. The fur is actually made up of transparent, rather than white, hollow hairs, which reflect light and so appear white.
