Connectivity checks seem wholey #unencrypted (HTTP).
They were introduced in 2017.
The internet has survived for many years without them and if you run other #internetApplications that require a persistent connection like #I2P, #BitcoinCore, a #TorRelay or some other, try to configure those to alert you to connectivity issues.
