I can't be the only person who never used likes to help a post anywhere get visibility, right? 😅

ever since my tumblr days the like button was always to let a person posting something know I enjoyed their post (or thatI'm sorry for what's going on) when I didn't really feel like sharing it... most often either bc it was a personal post or bc it had a context that would be lost if I share it in isolation

I’ve not done one of these here yet. Hi! I’m Kayla, PhD candidate in looking at suicide methods, locations of suicide and pro-suicide content online/digital communities.

I’ve worked in suicide prevention/intervention/postvention for over 7 years and am founder of a non-profit in this area.

My interests are wide and varied. Hope to see toots from people interested in

2) Absurdist streamers roleplay as NPCs, performing exaggerated looping movements and repeating catchphrases

“They’re picking up on all the ‘uncanny valley’ things about how NPCs behave in video games" ... NPCs “don’t behave like ordinary people do, they’re not offended if you make them repeat themselves over and over. They don’t expect you to cooperate in conversation.”

"The ability for users to choose if they wish to be collateral damage is what makes Mastodon work."

It's a lovely change of heart and insight - written by a tech blogger - on what Mastodon is and isn't.

@karawynn it's a smaller scale, but there was, until just this year, a place called renovate forum:

"Renovate Forum was established in 1999 and we've enjoyed watching it grow to become Australia's largest online renovation forum with more than 40,000 members. We've seen thousands of avid home renovators search for timely, practical and expert advice on their latest building or DIY projects, always ready to be welcomed by the community's army of trusted trade professionals eager to share their expertise and industry tips."

Some ads, no worries. I browsed to learn about different methods of old house construction in my area.

That quote is from CloudFlare/airtasker. Which bought and then shut down the site. Local diy resource goneski.

If you don't care about social media companies newly charging exorbitant fees for API usage for research, maybe you'll care about this other kind of social science research. Consider all the quantified cultural heritage we are losing when only VC-backed LLM factories can access internet history. Dirthatted wankclownery.
