@brodokk @me If we managed to support #InternetExplorer back in the day, anyone can support #FireFox today.
@godnojoe They already did: the “do not track” header. It was supposed to express the user's desire to not be tracked.
#Microsoft programmed #InternetExplorer to turn on DNT by default *without* asking the user, which defeats the purpose of DNT, so of course every site ignores DNT and shows a consent popup anyway.
Microsoft sabotaged DNT, in other words.
And that is why your idea won't work. It relies on the good faith of actors that aren't operating in good faith.
Cuz it did use #Gecko in the past on #Linux, #WebKit on #macOS and even the shitty #Trident engine of #InternetExploder [#InternetExplorer] on #Windows...

@jalefkowit Those who have experienced #InternetExplorer know what level of patience it takes to be a true #webdev! 😅
This is a quite long video and it's two years old, but it's worth it. It explains how the stuff people hate in modern #Windows has its roots all the way back in #WindowsXP, despite it being beloved by many as one of the best OS'es ever made. Stick until the very end to get the answer to solving all these issues.

@rail personally, I'd rather block #Chrome but then again I hate #DRM and don't want to weaponize it for #ads but rather inform people that #Google is, in fact, #evil!
I wished @BNetzA and @verbraucherzentrale would aggressively go after sites violating #NetNeutrality :loading: and doing #discrimination against users for using specific (still maintained!*) #WebBrowser|s.
[*Otherwise they'd force #WebDesigner|s to still support #InternetExplorer 6 / #IE6 aka. "#InternetExploder" to this day…]

Remember August 13, 1996 (27 years ago)? That's when Microsoft thought it would be fun to release Internet Explorer 3!
In a world where other browsers were like sleek sports cars, IE3 was the well-meaning family van. Sure, it got the job done, but let's face it – there were snazzier options out there.
Yet, IE3 brought its own quirks to the table, leaving us with fond memories of countless pop-ups.

I'm old enough to remember when Internet Explorer was the supported default and users of every other browser were told to go away.

Microsoft is trying too hard with Edge
Microsoft Edge has slowly crept its way up as one of the more popular web browsers people use every day, especially on Windows 11. In 2022, it even overtook Safari as the second-most-popular browser in the world behind Chrome (although it has since dropped back to third). Despite running on Chromium, the same engine as Chrome, it has a lot of feature

@jesse @genehack @d #ActiveState knew no fear—they made a #Microsoft Active Scripting (formerly #ActiveX Scripting) engine called #PerlScript. You could use it in #Windows Scripting Host or embed #Perl in HTML <script> tags that #InternetExplorer would run if the machine had PerlScript installed.
I don’t know if their hosted ActiveState Platform will build it for you now, though.

@kpeace @keithzg @aral Yes, but no.
Both companies’ web #browsers trace their origins to #Mosaic by The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign’s National Center for Supercomputing Applications (#NCSA).
#Netscape Navigator was a rewrite of #NCSAMosaic by its co-creators.
#Microsoft #InternetExplorer was based on code licensed from Spyglass, a #Mosaic trademark and technology licensee who had supposedly only used the original code sparingly.

@thenewoil This is the kind of shit that companies only try when they get a market monopoly. #Microsoft used to be this awful with #InternetExplorer, until #Firefox destroyed their market dominance. Now #Google's #Chrome has a similar level of monopoly to what IE used to, and surprise, surprise, Google are pulling some royally Microsoft level shite.
We can fight them back on this one issue, but the true long term solution is to ditch Chrome based browsers (#Edge,#opera etc) for Firefox/Safari.

#Windows95, #Windows98, and other decrepit versions can grab online updates again
#Retrocomputing fans can download the final updates released for '90s-era OSes.
#Microsoft took down the version of the site that could scan and update 95 and 98 in mid-2011. #WindowsUpdate Restored is lightly modified version of the original code, and the site itself doesn't use any kind of SSL or TLS encryption, so ancient #InternetExplorer versions can still access it without modification
