* For making it easier and cheaper to run your own instance. This will _never_ be an option for many people, but it _is_ a good thing to prioritize. Hand in hand with this improving the ability to #interop in #ActivityPub and other protocols, there are several efforts in this regard in flight now and I look forward to seeing what they manage.

* For prioritizing on a cultural level ensuring that you have not just representation but inclusion of marginalized groups in your mod/admin staff.

For some reason there's some deeply concerning tendency to write things in JS now on the server and I have no desire to do so myself.

@nixCraft It’s time for #Google to stop pretending #E2EE is a part of #RCS and not a proprietary extension, and what they really want is Google #interop, not RCS interop.

Also, their E2EE falls over in group conversations.

"Switching costs" are what you give up when you leave a service: if a service is siloed - if it blocks #interop with rivals - then quitting means giving up access to the people whom you left behind. This is the single most important difference between #ActivityPub-based #Fediverse services like #Mastodon and the silos like Twitter and Facebook - you can quit a Fediverse server and set up somewhere else, and still maintain your follows and followers:

Here @Mer__edith makes a good point about one big issue with #InteroperabilityAndPowerRelations: there's no #interop from below, that would be a poison, not a remedy: interop must include all the #privacy features that exist, not removing them.

OTOH interop with the likes of Fakebooz can only help the Suck and shareholders. People deserted once from WhatzUpp to Signal, that's a more solid trend to follow.

Works in politics too @davew. #Ireland is my preferred bailiwick (which I love with a passion that I just cannot shake off), but it confounds me that so many of my compatriots think they can unite the island politically without dealing with the legion of #interop issues a 100 years of separate development since partition in 1922 have created. Interop should be the priority “no matter the history”.

@abundance @openDemocracy I think if it had the chance to grow organically it could be, but exponential growth doesn't suit community creation and taking responsibility for payment and moderation. The latter particularly is a burden, we do it in other contexts (FB, Reddit) of course.

#Interop on the other hand is an answer to the question of power, even in a commercial and largely automoderated world.

#Tumblr will add support for #ActivityPub, the open, #decentralized social networking protocol that today is powering #social_networking software like Twitter alternative Mastodon, the #Instagram-like #Pixelfed, video streaming service #PeerTube, and others.

The news was revealed in response to a Twitter user’s complaint about Mastodon’s complexities.

“Don’t stress,” he said, before clarifying that Tumblr first has to deal with the waves of new users coming in right now from Twitter but that support for “#interop and #activitypub” were #due to come “#ASAP.”

In short, this announcement means Tumblr would move from being only a niche blogging platform to becoming a part of a larger, #decentralized_social_network of sorts — and one whose user base has grown in size in recent days as people flee #Elon_Musk’s #Twitter in search of new communities.

The #ActivityPub protocol, its website explains, provides a client-to-server API for creating, updating, and deleting content, as well as a federal server-to-server API for delivering notifications and subscribing to content. In practice, this means that #Mastodon users can interact with and follow users on other instances (independently run nodes) and on other social apps (like #PeerTube), which also support the implementation of ActivityPub.

It makes for a #web of social networks where users can find and follow each other without having to set up new accounts on each new service.

This is the opposite approach to today’s “#walled_garden” social networks, where a post on one platform can’t be viewed by those on others, unless you re-upload or repost the content directly or share a link to the other site where the content can be found.

If Tumblr were to add ActivityPub support, it means users on Mastodon could follow Tumblr users’ posts from their own Mastodon instance — without having to use the Tumblr app. It could also provide Tumblr users with an entry point into the so-called #fediverse without having to face some of the complexities that are involved with signing up for Mastodon for the first time.

Tumblr was already benefiting from the Twitter #exodus, having grown its U.S. app installs 7% week-over-week from the week prior to the acquisition and the 7 days after, data.ai had reported earlier this month. And, as of 12 days after Twitter’s acquisition, Tumblr’s worldwide downloads surged 77% to 301,000 up from 170,000 in the 12 days before the acquisition, Sensor Tower recently said.
