So I was thinking today ans trying to find out whether #activitypub is a heavy protocol, and if a server implementation will automatically need gigabytes of RAM. This based on my lack of knowledge of the subject and seeing some people cite very high resource requirements.

But even in this case, I wouldn't worry at all about #interoperabilty because the #DMA's interop mandate (unfortunately) only applies to messaging services, not #microblogging or other social networks. So, a gatekeeping #Mastodon instance (once designated as such by the @EU_Commission) might have obligations, but interoperability is not one of them.

In my Twitter farewell thread, I likened signing up and rebuilding here to moving house, top-3 among the most stressful experiences. It's actually more like moving countries, which I also did recently. So, it's interesting to read this article on #socialmedia #interoperabilty and how it might ease moves across the socialverse. I do think, though, that relying on regulations, and their tendency to homogenise towards capitalist norms, would be detrimental to the #fediverse.

Actively encouraging new users to instances run by others shows how commitment to #interoperabilty is more than supporting a particular protocol. It means thinking through the whole user experience, and acting in the short term to make the whole network stronger in the long run
