Hablitzia Tamnoides, Caucasian Spinach, is another 5/ #interplantingveg favorite: It's a perennial climber or cover crop which seems to prefer shade or semi-shade in zone 7 mainland Europe. It's quite prolific in our total shade balcony container!
You can mix it in with and use it like salad, spinach or swiss chard.

Apios Americana: A tuberous legume climber with fodder leaves (tested on guinea pigs) and tasty "nutty potato" tubers.
You can get improved cultivars from US #permaculture farms from an 80/90s LSU breeding programme.
It grows aggressively in late season, interplant with early maize worked.
Harvesting can be annoying, I grow them in bags. Doesn't produce seed in Central Europe, reducing the invasive potential it has.

This year I interplanted potatos with bush beans in growbags. The bush beans provide more ground cover and some production ahead of the potatos. I didn't notice much competition between the two yet. According to Walliser "Plant Partners: Science-based Companion Planting for the Vegetable Garden", interplanting beans improves potato tuber size - can neither confirm nor deny this. I will plant the combination again next year.

I #interplanted tree #kale 'Lippische Palme' (Brassica oleracea convar. acephala var. sabellica), an old variety from Westphalia, with #zucchini, #garlic last year, #tomatoes, #apiosamericana, #salad and #spinach this year. There are various tree kale varieties.
+grows tall, without competing much for sunlight with lower growing veg if spaced broadly
+great fodder and food (esp. winter)
+can be continuously harvested between 8-5
+low maintenance
+insects like it

Applying #agroecology and #permaculture on an urban roof comes with trade-offs and experimental adaptation to an extreme environment. Yet some things work and I'll post some pleasant and productive interplanting experiences under #interplantingveg.
I try to do things by the science I'm aware of, yet there's often little conclusive science on the specific challenges of diversified #organic #vegetable #container #gadening I'm facing.
First up next: Tree kale 'Lippische Palme'
