As it was raining in Dresden this morning, we have decamped (as planned) to Heidelberg, where the sun is shining (for now) #interrailing

After an early landing in Travemünde, a mishap with bus tickets and bus stops (we bought too many tickets and failed to request a sensible stop), we got to Dresden on a grey afternoon. #interrailing

Less #interrailing, more interboating, as we take the ferry from Malmö to Travemünde tonight. It’s going to be a pretty quiet sailing, I think, unless the many lorry drivers become rowdy later on.

Today, we took the train up to Helsingborg, an electric ferry across to Helsingør, had a look round Hamlet’s castle, and then got the train back to Copenhagen and Malmö #interrailing

After a day on the rails, including a five-hour journey from Hamburg to Copenhagen, which was just one minute delayed (having departed five minutes late), we say good evening to Malmö. And having watched many many hours of Nordic Noir, I was totally prepared for the bedroom door to open outwards into the corridor. #interrailing

European rails begin here. It’s very different from when I was here last (39 years ago). Now, a metro to the suburbs of Rotterdam; then a direct train to Copenhagen, with through coaches to Berlin and Moscow. #interrailing

French strike: #trains are cancelled or running normally. No chaos. Plenty of seats. Cancellations are visible at #SNCF the evening before. I don’t think they change during the day. I had to start really early from Ventimiglia but no problems. Trains in late afternoon and evening are cancelled (today) though, hence the early start. #traintravel #interrail #interrailing #train #France

A #train ride is relaxing because it’s basically a trip through the countryside. The infrastructure needed for the trip is mostly invisible and the default view is to the sides. Whereas in a car, the default view and focus (even as a passenger) is on the road ahead and on other cars (whose drivers can do something stupid at any moment).
