Seapalms, Postelsia palmaeformis, along the Mendocino County coast in Calif. This annual species thrives on wave swept rocky shorelines in the northeast Pacific. Large waves help remove competitors, namely mussels, allowing the alga to colonize popular real estate on the shore.

When I first saw this prawn (Palaemon sp.) in the rockpools last year, I though Iā€™d stumbled on a new species! But alas no. This poor chap is infected with a fungus Inodosporus octosporus, which has caused his insides to turn a milky white. The common name of this infection is, in fact, milk disease!

My beach cleaning brings me lots of surprises, especially living ones! Iā€™ve rescued many animals over the last few years, washed up on the beach, that Iā€™ve returned to the water in the hope theyā€™ll survive. AND Iā€™m going LIVE with @koala_holly this morning at 11am, over on Instagram. Please join us for intertidal marine chitchat! On insta Iā€™m @elizabethbeston

The velvet swimming crab aka devils crab (Necora puber) has a bit of a rep. I donā€™t think the devil bit in the name helps! Admittedly, they do seem a little aggressive when you come across them! Iā€™m always impressed with their ā€˜Iā€™m bigger than you!ā€™ attitude šŸ˜

A common brittlestar (Ophiothrix fragile). Unlike starfish, a brittlestarā€™s arms donā€™t have organs in them, and are primarily used for locomotion. To be a total hypocrite, I wouldnā€™t recommend handling brittlestars as their arms break very easily. These were held briefly for identification and a video for my records and then gently placed back.

Starfish can regenerate their arms, like this one is doing. And itā€™s not just the odd arm here and there, oh no! It is thought that they can pretty much regenerate a whole body, just as long as the central disc is intact! This is no mean feat, considering that starfishā€™s arms contain a water vascular system for moving hundreds of tube feet, their reproductive organs, their digestive system, and their eyes!!

Some nature finds from my beach clean this morning. Clockwise from top left - common whelk (Buccinum undatum) eggs; hydroid Amphisbetia operculata (edited) with worm tubes and a itty bitty sea squirt living on it; the smallest razor clam shell Iā€™ve ever seen; bryozoan Electra pilosa growing on plastic rubbish. Everything was left on the beach, apart from the plastic.

Three animals that look like seaweed. From left to right, sponge (mermaidā€™s glove), bryozoan (hornwrack), hydroid (unsure of species, maybe helter skelter).
All found on the beach this morning.

Pennantā€™s swimming crab (Portumnus latipes). Something I donā€™t see very often in the intertidal, like, this is it, just the once. When you regularly explore rocky shores, you start to notice the subtle differences between species, and itā€™s always exciting to see something new!

Common hermit crabs (Pagurus bernhardus) always seem to be hungry. These guys are working hard to pluck organic matter from the water to consume. Link to YouTube video below ā¬‡ļø

Sea gooseberries (Pleurobrachia pileus) are awesome! We had masses of them washing up on some of our beaches last year. Sea gooseberries are in the Phylum Ctenophora (so not jellyfish!) and they donā€™t have stinging cells. Instead, their tentacles are sticky and their prey gets stuck before being passed to the Sea Gooseberryā€™s mouth.
