I don't think I could have done this two years ago. I know this is humblebragging, but that's what Mastodon is for, and it's cool to see myself grow over time.

I'm hoping to play some catchup this weekend, so hopefully it's smooth(er) sailing from here on out.

My day job got pretty hectic this week, so this Wednesday's Technical class was more fumbly than I like. We talked about algorithmic complexity and Big O notation:

Today's technical class was about the fundamentals of coding.

Why are the fundamentals so important? I think about it this way:

During your interview, will you need to use recursion? A PriorityQueue? A graph? Maybe!

But will you need to use an array? An if statement? A for loop? YES.

So make sure you're solid on the fundamentals before you dive into more advanced concepts!

Yesterday was day two of this semester's class on Technical Interviewing. We talked about the history of data structures, algorithms, and technical interviews: happycoding.io/tutorials/inter

I think this lecture might have been more interesting to me than anybody else, but at least my internet didn't go out in the middle of class this time!

I'm going to try to post content here as we work through it in class, so folks can follow along and learn about technical if they want.

Today was mostly about working through my own existential crisis:

My own approach to candidates in recent years has been giving them a real world skeleton class. It's meant to simulate real day to day work, which to be honest, is pretty easy and boring. The goal isn't to test skills, it's really to understand how a person communicates. Unless you're a real outlier, most people improve at any given skill if they do it every day, so accepting good dev skills and great communication is more valuable to me.

Overall, the COVID-19 crisis had a negative effect on survey fieldwork based on experiences and lessons from two major supplements to the U.S. Panel Study of Income Dynamics.

Rollercoaster of continues. I *think* I just had 2 pretty good interviews, one behavioral one tech, but it's also possible that I completely messed up the tech one so badly I can't even tell. 🤞

So if you’re interviewing for a mid-level engineering position and the company expects five interviews before they can make a judgment call, be aware of what you’re saddling up for.

What is people's issue with coding challenges when you're ?

*looks at common coding challenges*

Oh, the issue is that most companies have crappy challenges.

: programming challenges are not for you to test every aspect of a prospect's skills. If a take-home takes more than a couple hours, you're wasting everyone's time.

I did a take-home for my current employer. It took an hour and a half. It lead to a meaningful discussion of my skillset.

And now that I *am* back to fingers on keys, I'm discovering that some of my references have fallen prey to Twitter's link-rot. Curses!

If anyone has references to Amazon’s interviewing model, past or present, in which they explicitly coach interviewees to view references to “we” as evidence of low-contribution, and instead seek candidate heavily favoring "I" declarations, I'd love to see them.

Current job search. Some notes:

1) It’s important to be kinda prepared for those technical tests. I’m a backend dev so that means being able to spin up an api from scratch. Including db, app tier and web tier. With test for all of these. For extra points be able to point openAPI at the api and autogenerate a react end point.

I am trying to attend a live and in-person job fair tomorrow. I'm out of practice with all in-person exchanges, much less the professional variety. But I hope a chance to meet employers will give me a better shot than all this online application stuff---so far a dark void.

In tonight’s edition of “Not Tweets,” I think out loud about how I wish interviews were better at assessing future potential and why I think showing past work is a poor way to evaluate candidates.

Interviewing is exhausting, especially when you're a weirdly shaped bundle of skills and expertise like I am.

Whenever someone asks me to tell them about myself, the first thing that runs through my head is: "I'm just this human, ya know?"

Just got told that the company with whom I spent more than a month interviewing with and "passed the interviews" and was waiting for an offer... will be freezing hiring for this role, sorry. Tech world is wild
