Today being an #IntimacyDirector meant a 5-hour flight followed by 8 hours of discussion & devising diegetic consent mechanics for a new larp, followed by movement workshops.

I’m exhausted & dehydrated, but collaborating with creatives who want to develop invigorating experiences for players that tell the story of transgression while remaining sustainable & supporting actors’ boundaries is so worth it.

Today being an #IntimacyDirector means respecting my own boundaries and taking a day to myself.

After a six-hour workshop with over 200 students yesterday, I feel satisfied, but after not getting home until after midnight, I need to respect my own needs and rest so that my work remains sustainable.

Practice what you preach.

Today being an #IntimacyDirector looked like a zoom planning consent mechanics for next weekend’s devising workshop in NYC, during which Sinking Ship Creations will be devising their next playable performance piece…

…and now I’m about to drive 3 hours to lead workshops with the entire undergraduate theatre cohort at CSU Northridge.

My life involved more work & less commute before I moved to CA but it’s worth it.

Today being an #IntimacyDirector looked like meeting with #HigherEd #theatre colleagues to discuss the sources & shapes of different types of resistance to consent-based performance practice we’ve encountered and engaging with the National Equity Project’s #LiberatoryDesign model to find ways to more overtly argue against and disrupt the approaches our field has inherited.

An #IntimacyDirector can provide consent-based techniques to support the process & establish a shared vocabulary to foster clearer communication. We cannot control the ways people treat one another--especially offstage.

We're physical storytellers also trained to mediate, facilitate difficult conversations, and to recognize & document concerns re: consent.

THAT is what we're there to do.
Anyone telling you an ID will singlehandedly stop harm from occurring (esp ongoing issues) is... misled.

Today being an #IntimacyDirector included calling an actor who wrote that they needed more information about our production’s context prior to feeling capable of performing a certain role as cast.

Once they had the context, they were pumped! The role works w their boundaries.

If another conclusion had been reached, the director would have been able to cast someone who was eager to perform all the role’s requirements, facilitating collaboration.

#Consent based casting is possible, folx.
