A Spanish detachment & a priest accompanied him, as garrisons were stationed in #Intramuros & #Luneta bec of fear of uprising. A bugler & a drummer led the way. As Rizal neared the execution site, he exclaimed "Oh Father how terrible it is to die... how one suffers. I forgive them from the bottom of my heart." He saw his executioners—70th Regiment composed of 8 Filipinos, & behind them Spanish shooters in case they hesitate.

The voluntary disarmament of the city was not acknowledged by the Japanese. The burning of Sto. Domingo Church in #Intramuros on 27 Dec 1941, immortalized by Fernando Amorsolo's painting, was one of the casualties wrought on the city after the Open City declaration. The defense of Bataan & Corregidor, even when ending in defeat due to the reinforcements that would never come, successfully prevented the Japanese from using Manila Bay as harbor for their ships. It delayed the invasion by 4 mos.

In May 1898, the U.S. through Adm. George Dewey, assisted the return of the exiled Emilio Aguinaldo to #PH, to resume the PH Revolution vs. Spain. Dewey verbally promised Aguinaldo that the U.S. had no imperial aspirations on PH. Apolinario Mabini was among the 1st to express doubts on U.S. intentions on #PH. The suspicious actions of the U.S. in Aug 1898 on their possession of #Intramuros, forbidding Filipinos to enter the city heightened tensions bet. Filipino & U.S. troops.

The street-level imagery for the new cycle path around #Intramuros has been uploaded to #Mapillary

I don't think it's actually officially opened yet. It starts in the corner of General Luna and P. Burgos, but there's still a tree branch blocking the path.

Surface is uneven, and there are portions where water don't drain properly.

It seems to end near Anda Circle, and that portion is still incomplete, in another muddy section of the segment.
