I'm pretty sure it's one of these, though in pictures I see it with flowers. Ours has never gotten flowers though maybe because we don't let it get big enough. It's invasive! liisma.org/princess-tree/

Today has been another invasive species clean up day! Thankfully, none of the buckthorn grew back that I struggled with last year, so that's a win.

-First we have common tansy. This one has been posted on signs at all the state parks I've been to here in Michigan this year as a new 'report-if-seen' invasive. Of course, I found a large patch near the house already. The culprit is seed mixes and seed bombs. For the love of all the gods, research your wildflower seed mixes!

-Autumn olive. This is my third year trying to get rid of these. I hate to, really, because I actually love the lunar feel of these beautiful silvery shrubs. They smell sweet and the birds love the berries, which is why they spread so fast. I have a duty to my land to control it, though.

-Spotted knapweed. This fucker. This plant is actually restricted in Michigan, making it illegal to possess or sell. How did it get all over the roadside? The county dug up some lines, and when they spread a grass seed mix to cover the damaged soil, they introduced it. Again, research your seed mixes and make sure they are made for your area!

AM critter highlights. Central , August 2023

I'm a bit under the weather this morning, so this'll be brief.

1) A silvery damsel fly amid damp earth & pebbles.

2) A bumblebee on a sunflower.

3) A grasshopper in the (invasive) Santa Maria Feverfew. They were clearly ready for their closeup.

4) And an encore appearance by a cuckoo in a walnut tree!

Non-native grasses are not just a danger in Hawaii. Similar non-native grasses are also the main reason for the recent fires in the Mojave Desert of California and in other deserts of the US West.

On invasive / non-native species, in response to twitter.com/majda72/status/168

I'm all for native plants and the reduction of invasives (ideally by them becoming food for something?), while also trying to operate from respect and understanding of non-native species. They didn't choose to be cultivated and domesticated in a foreign environment, or to end up as a seed on a truck or cargo ship traveling to a different climate/continent. This is a new frame for me, so I'm working on practicing it in reality — though there are cultures that have been integrating it, e.g. these perspectives and research from
Nicholas Reo and Laura Ogden.

Not all plants are weeds. Not all introduced species are invasive. And even the so called 'notorious' invasives support native wildlife in the ecologically disturbed habitats of our great cities.

Velvet grass, a highly invasive species, has killed dogs and cats, and contains enough cyanide that it has even killed goats who ate too much. A turf grass that not only chokes out other species, it is allopathic and poisons its neighbors, and can inhibit tree growth. Introduced to my watershed in the form of two grass hay bales, spread on a small landslide in the winter of 2017.
My watershed is a rarity having high densities of healthy intact CA native prairie. In a few short years this shit has moved throughout the watershed. I spent 80 hrs in 2018 pulling velvet grass from ground zero, but unfortunately it escaped off site, and is colonizing the watershed at an alarming pace, spread by heavy equipment, car tires and the wind.
I just pulled every velvet grass seedling, before it set seed, on both sides of a four mile stretch of road. Im tired, heartbroken, and very angry.
My advice from doing decades of watershed restoration .......never, ever, ever, use any bales except rice straw as mulch.
Photos, Before and after weeding velvet grass (holcus lantanus) out of the ditch.
A lovely green and purple, low growing bed of Self-Heal ( prunella vulgaris) emerges. Self-Heal is both edible and medicinal.

Invasive plant management by residential and absentee amenity rural landowners
"An estimated 22-45% of landowners in Australia are absentee. Our research aimed to better understand whether absentee land ownership in Australia makes a difference to how weeds are managed."

Progress on establishing a native wildflower garden in my neighborhood.

Spoiler alert: It is hard to fight off the invasives.

Not sure if Pokeweed (Phylotacca sp. not sure which) is classified as invasive. Garden escape. I see it in a couple of places where it was not obviously planted; it comes back persistently and the large leaves cast heavy shade, crowding out competition. In flower at the moment; berries photographed in a previous year.

Another familiar albeit unwelcome sight in North American woodlands: Garlic mustard (Alliaria petiolata). This European native crowds out understory plants, and the phytochemicals released from its roots disrupt the associations plants form with mycorrhizal fungi. In many states it is therefore considered a noxious weed that needs to be eradicated.

The Bulbous Buttercup has a beautiful color, but is an invasive in the U.S.

It uses its corm (the bulbous part at the root level) to survive winters and bad weather and outcompete native buttercups and other plants.

So in this garden, the flower shown will be pulled up before seeding out. Other invasives will be hunted down in an active and continual effort to conserve .

Do the same in your habitat.
