Hmm. It doesn't say they're inedible but it also doesn't say they aren't, just to keep your boat free of these buggers. Here's to hoping we can clam chowder our way out of this mess 😒

Not all plants are weeds. Not all introduced species are invasive. And even the so called 'notorious' invasives support native wildlife in the ecologically disturbed habitats of our great cities.

Are new like worse in this year?
Yesterday in they were all over the place. Today in there were even more. Like 1000’s.

I paused under the Henry Hudson Parkway to swat a few 100. Felt pointless. Some helpful guy said to me “you’re the third person I seen stopped to swat those things”. Geez.

@Coho From my perspective as a lowly native plant gardener and just observant concerned citizen, much of what the state or fed government is doing makes no sense. For some reason the forest service has cleared down to dirt 10 feet on either side of a forest road North of me. That road is even gated off, so it is just hikers using it. What is the excuse? A fire break? Embers can easily cross it. A trail we hiked last week in the same watershed had thousands of wildflowers on the old road cut. They haven't had time to seed. I can just imagine with horror all flowers cut down, and their reseeding potential gone at this other fire road. Fairy lilies, Chinese Houses, Bush Snapdragon to name a few slaughtered. The same is not true for the invasive grasses. They have already seeded and will have no competition next year. So the forest service is creating more tinder for next year. Wow, job security for whatever contractor or agency doing the clearing. $$$$

Two of the on - &
I'm one of many local who do invasive removal work on a year round basis. We depend on ppl to report sightings w/GPS info so we can go remove. We need ppl to ask florists to educate customers who buy these plants about dangers & being responsible with disposal.
Please sightings here:

More volunteers are always needed & welcomed!

It's a hard balance between getting rid of fossil fuel powered machinery and vehicles and buying *new stuff that is electric, mostly plastic encased and is made in countries a long way from here. The first thing to think about is using LESS energy all around and buy less stuff. I did get an electric mower a while back because letting the yard get tall and dry in these fire summers is a bad idea. But, I am also constantly finding ways of using up that space to grow food. I have no native top soil, just rocky grit so I build raised beds everywhere. One area in my yard has a whole bunch of clay type soil that a neighbour was getting rid of many years ago. It became a base for building fertile soil but it's the only spot that has any. That doesn't mean the weeds don't grow in the rest, they grow everywhere. Couch grass is the main culprit. Some weeds are useful medicinals and pollinators: dandelions, plantain, and mullein. There is a bad patch of invasives: blackberries, tansy and mint. I pick as many berries as I can, pick and dry the mint for tea, and dry the tansy to use in the bee smoker. But there is still far too much. Chopping it back (with a machete) every year before it goes to seed seems to help it from spreading. I'm constantly searching for new ways to use less engine powered machinery and more hand powered tools. And keeping the peace and the silence.

@haq Thanks for elaborating. Many of these issues were experienced using ostensibly for control. I found the true value of the goats was in attracting a younger demographic and providing petting zoo functionality and increased donations and the perception of being green. The goats were expensive. Fences had to be constructed to keep the goats in and predators out. The goats didn't eat the invasives as much as they were purported to do. I can't say they didn't eat any.
