IrfanView has been my primary image viewer/editor on Windows for 2+ decades now. I had given up that any app like it would ever appear on Linux. And yesterday I decided to try IrfanView with Wine - to my pleasant surprise it installed and works like a native app! 🎉

@JohnHimself Good choice. I've been migrating to #Linux as #Windows10 approaches sunset. Still haven't found a good replacement for #Irfanview and its easy to use custom slideshow mode (running it in #WINE stinks).

Unfortunately I still have to figure out virtualizing #Windows11 to deal with needing #AdobeCC and #MakeMusic #Finale for work, but at least I can contain the lunacy of #Microsoft and #Adobe somewhat within the VM.

#Linux people: does anyone know of an app as good as #Irfanview, but for Linux?

To be more specific, does anyone know of an image viewer that will handle very old 2-colour #PCX files and (in an ideal world) #Psion PIC files? Because at the moment I'm having to boot a VM and run Irfanview, and it's getting tedious.

I've tried feh, gThumb... Even GIMP won't do it. It's like the world has forgotten this format ever existed.

How do you invert a color's brightness without changing the color?

I'm trying to manually create an inverted color scheme for my terminal.

Do you have to actually do the RGB => HSV conversion and back again, or is there some simple arithmetic shorthand for it?

If anyone remembers very old versions of #Irfanview, its invert feature inverted the brightness without changing the colors. It might have been a bug, but it was also a cool feature. ;)

@jinxc before going #Mac, I loved #Irfanview and its many #plugins.

I wish it was available for macOS 😒

The latest update of #Windows11 decided to mess up my audio settings and caused a couple of other issues.

Decided to fire up my #Linux #Laptop . I had not been on my #Lenovo T400 for a couple of weeks. Updated #MX_Linux with no issues. You will notice that I have 3 #Windows apps on the Desktop: #IrfanView, #PaintShopPro7 and #Skip98 (yes, a #Windows98 game). #SimpleMindPro is also loaded, but no icon on desktop.

I just love the simplicity and the beauty of the MX Linux wallpaper.

IrfanView has been my favorite and default image viewer on Windows for 20+ years now. And to this day, it has the _fastest_ installer I have ever seen - click Install and it is already done in the blink of an eye. 🖼

I definitely recommend #Irfanview batch mode to resize and resample the files; get the 'extras' download as well. (Given you're using #faststone it's safe to assume you're running windows).

Coincidentally but off-topic, Faststone and Irfanview, (and notepad++) are the only apps that I regularly use that I can't also use on #linux. I use #geany instead of #notepad++, but screen captures in particular and batch image management to an extent are still problematical in the linux world.

Not iOS as only on Windows, I use the excellent #irfanview app (by the Bosnian developer Irfan Skiljan) to batch process & downsize photos before sharing, with the option to remove all metadata as well. Slightly more complicated as I need to transfer pics off my phone into my PC but this action alone also serves as backup too. I avoid using the cloud to store photos via automatic synch as cloud storage seems to fill up so quickly!

on that note, I have no idea why no one ported feh for windows. Sure, #irfanview can do slideshows, but not "from a text file of all file paths to cycle through", even though that's been an outstanding request for _years_ and irfanview is *the* image viewer on Windows.
