Had an idea for the specific size of sectors for a 2D galactic map:
A galaxy with a radius of 100.000 lightyears is divided into 50 rings that are 1000 ly wide and high. Each ring is cut into sectors that are roughly 1000 ly long. The further out you go, the closer each sector gets to a cube.
Putting the numbers in Wolfram Alpha this gets me a total of 3927 sectors.
At about 200 sectors explored, that's 5% of the galaxy.
Feels appropriate for a civilization of ~12 species.

A quick summary of all the important technical limitations and social environment that define the Iridium Moons setting.
@yourdemonicfather Interstellar Trade Language is a language with very simple grammar and a single writing system, but with three different ways that each character can be pronounced. The three pronunciation systems sound completely different to make it possible that any species in known space can pronounce at least one of them.
To be fluent, you have to understand all three, but even without that you can still communicate in writing.
With the weather being cold and wet, I've been making no progress on my fantasy campaign setting all months. I am having zero inspiration, even though I am really motivated. I think I only make progress when it's warm and sunny.
Fortunately, I also have my space opera setting to work at, and with that one inspiration is no problem at all when the mood for fantasy isn't there. Cold and grey still works for space ships. 😄

The social classes of the #IridiumMoons setting.
Site Update:
I added a setting overview page and a page about the social classes of the #IridiumMoons campaign setting for #Coriolis

Working on my Neocities website for #Kaendor and #IridiumMoons is fun.
All I'm using is some vague memories from an HTML class I did 18 years ago, and looking up HTML tags on the internet.
And being a Neocities sites, I'm totally alright with it being embarrassingly bad. That's authentic to web pages from 20 years ago. No rush to make it good, useful, or even just have a point.
I kind of feel like I should be doing more work on my fantasy setting #Kaendor instead of my space opera setting #IridiumMoons, as it's the far better candidate for my next campaign that I can start this summer, I've already been working on it for such a long time, and it's the focus of my main website.
But when did that ever stop me?! 😆

New Site Post: The New Frontier
http://iridiummoons.com/2023/04/17/the-new-frontier/
The New Frontier is the primary setting for #IridiumMoons. A border region on the outer edge of Known Space that used to be the great hope for booming industry and new markets, but fell into a steady decline after an initial boom. Largely forgotten by the home systems, these sectors have been left to the merchant houses and mining clans to run as they see fit.

I'm really not a fan of the whole Clone Wars era of Star Wars and its own Expanded Universe. But today it occurred to me that Episode I might actually be a really good touchstone for the style and feel I am trying to create with #IridiumMoons
I still don't like the movie as a whole, but its visual style and tone for the pre-Clone War Republic is really quite unique for Star Wars and it feels like it could have gone a completely different direction from there.

While many of the details about the Iridium Moons setting are still constantly changing, I felt that I can't really describe any social and political aspects without at least a basic introduction for the most prominent and influential species that take up much of the center stage. Some of the minor ones might still change, but these major ones are very much set at this stage.

@Yora
I mean - hyperspace travel (presumably ftl) is already in the realm of "magic" sci-fi, and it's a staple of the genre.
What you're describing sounds like a really cool setting to me - I don't think, my group would be super into it, but I'll definitely check out the #iridiumMoons website over the weekend.
At some point I once decided that starships in #IridiumMoons going to hyperspace first have to reach a distance from the nearest star where its gravity is as low as the Sun's gravity is at the orbit of Neptune. I calculated this for different star masses, as well as the distance habitable planets would already have from their star to see how much further you'd have to go.
After a lot of number crunching, I now have the results.
And not a clue what to do with them. 😶

I am stuck with work on my Space Opera setting #IridiumMoons because I can't continue writing anything before I have named the last three of the ten species that inhabit space.
I hate naming things... ðŸ˜
Site Update:
Iridium Moons now has its own domain at http://iridiummoons.com
Links to https://hyperspace.spriggans-den.com no longer work because Wordpress is a drama queen.
I am finding that Dune and Cyberpunk 2077 actually make for a really interesting mashup setting.
Even with the whole "no robo" thing.
It's not so much in the tech and the gadgets, but in the themes and tone.

New Site Post: Some things I figured out about running Space opera campaigns
Space Opera is a great genre to allow players to freely roam the galaxy in their own ship, with nobody telling them what to do. But turning this premise into campaigns of grand high-stakes adventures is somewhat of a challenge when simply running away from danger is always an option.

New Site Post: The Three Fantasies and the Great Filter
http://hyperspace.spriggans-den.com/2023/03/27/the-three-fantasies-and-the-great-filter/
I think it's always great when science-fiction tries to tell storeis that manage to stay within the laws of nature. And it's always lame when they don't follow the rules of their own world. But even when you try to keep things as realistic and plausible as possible, when you are making Space Opera you just have to make up some new rules yourself.
I think the coolest idea I came up with for #IridiumMoons is the Interstellar Trade Language.
It's a single language with a single writing system, but there are three systems for pronouncing the letters. These three phonetic systems are designed for different forms of vocalization to enable all known species to speak in at least one of them.
But to consider yourself fluent in ITL you have to be able to understand all three. That's how everyone understands the Chewbaccas and Jabbas.
