On our latest episode @Ruthfcarden tells how a picture of a era dog jaw bone triggered a grass roots project to learn more about these dogs from over a 1,000 years ago. The picture is not always pretty but there is much to be learned here

"Despite Ireland being famous across the world for its ancient sites and historic buildings, some are at risk of being wiped from the map.
Our national monuments - from megalithic tombs to castles and industrial mills - not only face threats from climate change and vandalism but a policy brought in around 20 years ago means many have radically reduced State protection."

Teampall Caomháin • Inis Oírr

A small stone church was established here as early as the 11th century, and it was later extended with a chancel in the 13th century.

The church has almost been entirely swallowed by the drifting sand, and has only been kept clear by the dedication and work of the islanders.

More from Killuragh cave, Ireland. This distal humerus (fore leg) bone from a pig of wild boar found in the same pit fill as Arctic lemming, Irish mountain hare and wood mouse. Hopefully we can get it radiocarbon dated. Very visible parallel fine cut incised marks on the bone associated with butchering practices by humans.

@Pat you might find some under or hashtags and there's often a good representation of Irish sites in hashtags I find.

May also find more info on the hashtag, someone on this may know of more specific accounts

In his book, 'Experiments on Reality', the cartographer and writer Tim Robinson describes the 'three fragile moments of place' as 'beauty, strangeness and antiquity'.

I can't think of anywhere that fits the criteria so well as Skellig Michael.

If you'd like to delve deeper into the story and visitor experience of Skellig Michael, you can read more in our free article

After sailing by it each time we went to Skellig Michael, it was fantastic to finally get to visit Illaunloughan at the weekend, lovely site!

Recommend the really interesting publication on the excavation there by Jenny White Marshall and Claire Walsh.

In celebration of Abarta Heritage and Discovery Programme bring you a video diary of our ongoing research at an early medieval ringfort in Leitrim. The team are using a range of non-invasive survey techniques to uncover hidden evidence which may tell us more about those who inhabited the site and the wider landscape, and how the community and public might engage with the monument in the future.

Just wondering: Does anyone know of any sources/reports that discuss differences between recent archaeological excavation programmes of Scotland/Ireland/Northern Ireland (or any combination of these)?

Interested to look at the varying site distributions and if there are varying trends in what types of sites are being excavated more frequently where.

Thank you for helping out a tired PhD student! 😂
