A referendum on 22nd May 2015 amended the Constitution of Ireland to provide that marriage is recognised irrespective of the sex of the partners. The amendment was approved by 62%-38% of the voters.

ON 6th March 1998 a report was published in The Irish Times confirmed that the Irish nation would be defined in terms of its people, rather than its territory, in the new wording for Article 2 of the Irish Constitution which became effective on 2nd December 1999.

“The Irish were the true pioneers both in the development of religious constitutionalism and in symbolizing its project though appeals to human dignity” - Samuel Moyn (2015) "Christian Human Rights".

The 1937 incorporated thinking of its time on human dignity. It also (comparatively speaking) lacked the authoritarianism of contemporary constitutions.

As such, it is part of the history of the evolution of human rights.
