Last week’s count for BirdWatch Ireland’s #IrishGardenBirdSurvey was a respectable 19 species, including the first Fieldfare in a couple of years, plus a male Bullfinch — a bird that always cheers me up. The same week last year yielded 18 species, while a year before that I had 19 species #birdwatching #birds #nature #Ireland

Last week’s count for BirdWatch Ireland’s #IrishGardenBirdSurvey was just 16 species, but I’m thrilled that it included Sparrowhawk and Redwing. The same week last year yielded 18 species, while a year before that I had 19 species #birdwatching #birds #nature #Ireland

Three years of #IrishGardenBirdSurvey: this year, last year and the year before last. 2020–21 was much better in terms of abundance and numbers of species. Also, Goldfinches stopped taking nyjer seed last year, which is a pain in the bum. I have a 36-inch-long specialist nyjer feeder which can accommodate 24 birds.

Before I go, here are the results from last winters #IrishGardenBirdSurvey! Every winter is different, and the more people who take part the more we'll know about all of these birds and more in an Irish context!

The decline of Greenfinches has been driven by a parasite, Trichomonas gallinae. It’s a parasite that has affected pigeons, poultry and birds of prey throughout history and has been known as ‘frounce’ or ‘canker’. #IrishGardenBirdSurvey

Last week’s #IrishGardenBirdSurvey had fewer species and lesser numbers than the same week last year, BUT, I had my first Greenfinch in over a year 🥳. There’s still a lot of natural food (berries, seeds, invertebrates) out there, so feeders are less busy.

Thirteen weeks of the dark Irish winter suddenly become bearable because the #IrishGardenBirdSurvey starts today 😁 🤸🏻♀️
Head over to birdwatchIreland.ie to take part in this citizen science project. It’s useful and fun! Today’s count in my #DunLaoghaire garden is very modest so far, but the mild weather means there is still a lot of natural food available.
