Our latest post on the @ucdlibrary Cultural Heritage blog borrows the title of Carolle J. Carter’s book to tell the story of the arrest of a Nazi German spy who lived in Ireland for a year and a half before being caught.

Ryan was released from prison in 1940 with the help of German authorities. He then collaborated with Nazi Germany, believing a German invasion of Britain would be advantageous to the Irish nationalist cause.

Frank Ryan was born in County Limerick on 11 September 1902. He participated in the Spanish Civil War on the Popular Front side, fighting for the Comintern-organised International Brigades (retroactively known as the Connolly Column). After being captured by pro-Nationalist Italians, he was sentenced to death. 1/2

On the 9 September 1845 the Dublin Evening Post officially reported that the Potato Blight had arrived in Ireland. The disease had previously been reported in Belgium, but this was the first time that it had been spotted in Ireland. It is thought that the first outbreak of Blight may have occurred in Waterford, though there is no concrete proof that it had not previously been unreported elsewhere.

225 years ago today a small combined force of Irish and French troops were defeated at the Battle of Ballinamuck. That defeat would spell the end of the 1798 rebellion but would ultimately give birth to an Irish Republic realized in the 20th century

Christy Brown died on 7 September 1981. He was an Irish writer and painter whose cerebral palsy allowed him to write or type only with the toes of one foot. His most recognized work is his autobiography, titled Down All The Days (1954). It was later made into a 1989 Academy Award-winning film My Left Foot, starring Daniel Day-Lewis as Brown. 1/2
