Linking repeaters over the Internet is pretty cool, because it means you can easily talk to people all over the world from a handheld or mobile radio without having to deal with HF, even in places without cell coverage.

Of course, you can't rely on the Internet in a disaster, its origins as a network intended to survive nuclear attack notwithstanding. The Internet can't even survive a backhoe, a fishing boat, or someone fat-fingering a BGP config.

Fortunately, repeater linking projects pre-date the Internet, and hams are well aware that you can't rely on the Internet in an emergency. I ran across a bunch of interesting projects looking for information about non-internet-dependent linking projects, at least one of which, the Target Link System, was local to me:

There's also the Cactus Intertie System, which started in 1971 and is nationwide in the US, but they appear to be a lot more "closed" in their operations. You can't even get documentation without being a member:

Only joined this instance a few days ago and it's already bearing fruit. I knew about #echolink and #irlp but was not aware of #allstar. Glad to see #allstar is @opensource too. 😁

#introductions hi everyone, I’m an amateur from central Victoria, Australia. Radio interests include RoIP modes including #IRLP, #EchoLink, #AllStar, #M17, #DMR, #DSTAR, #P25 and #YaesuSystemFusion . Currently not on #HF, but plan to fix that in 2023. In the past, I’ve taken part in many aspects of the hobby including #satellites, #ARDF, #foxhunting, #SSTV, #contesting, and others.

Outside of radio, I’m a Masters #athlete, primarily a #sprinter, and have many science and tech interests.

Some testing on #70cm, trying to check-in to #IRLP this morning, and yeah, I can receive pretty well on the j-pole, but transmitting is real spotty. I caved and ordered a proper #NanoVNA so I can be a bit more precise in my antenna experiments. I dislike how expensive it is to DIY VHF stuff, but I figure I'll get enough use out of it long-term.

I need to get my general and/or get decent speed at CW so I can move to the cheaper HF stuff. Slightly cheaper.
