Sad news that #ChenKenichi -- aka the Chinese specialist on the OG #IronChef -- has passed on. Stumbling across the broadcasts in the mid-1990s via the LA area channel that carried a variety of non-English programming was a revelation; my crew called it 'Gods of Cooking' lacking any other context or info. The show is and remains a marvel, something I'm so glad happened, and all his dishes looked great. TL;R There's two episodes of a failed pilot version of Iron Chef USA which are some of the campiest TV you'll ever watch.

If you can find it, you have GOT to watch the pilot of Iron Chef USA, which predate the current Iron Chef America and are a TRIP. They only ever made two eps, but they're absolutely *exquisite*. It's the closest I've seen any show come to recapturing the camp and flamboyance of the original Japanese show. Highlights:

1) It's hosted by William Shatner (he's a cunt, but in a Chairman Kaga role he just WORKS. Unbelievably fruity.
2) You want flamboyance? A chef rides in on a motorcycle. Someone serves a dish with sparklers in it.
3) You love the hokey English dub in the original. Here commentators are legit sports commentators who don't know anything about food. It's just incredible.
4) They somehow attracted legit respected US chefs, like Todd English, Roy Yamaguchi, Alessandro Strata. I have literally no idea how.

I'm settling in for a rewatch so hold, tight, this will probably turn into a live thread. But seriously, find this couple hours of deeply stupid television. It will enrich your life.
