I learned this yesterday and love the idea:
The Seventh Generation Principle is based on an ancient Haudenosaunee (Iroquois)* philosophy that the decisions we make today should result in a sustainable world seven generations into the future.

“The word Adirondack is thought to come from the Mohawk word ha-de-ron-dah meaning ‘eaters of trees’. The word was used by the Iroquois as a derogatory term for groups of Algonquians who did not practice agriculture and therefore sometimes had to eat tree bark to survive harsh winters.”

👆 cont. from above:
" ... If the choice of representations accommodated twentieth-century tourist’s expectations, it was also an authentic expression based on a long history of negotiating cultural encounters with Europeans.” The struggle between Kahnawake residents over the images displayed at Indians Days illustrates the varied and complex ways Kahnawake residents understood themselves as twentieth century Indians. Over the years, they had learned to manipulate ‘Indian’ imagery ”.
"Tribally owned Wáhta’ Maple Farm will produce and market organic maple syrup in various flavor profiles. The company will harvest sap from trees on #Oneida Nation lands.
"With the new venture, the tribe aims to showcase #sustainable practices that honor the significance of maple trees and sap in #Haudenosaunee (#Iroquois) culture..."

Today in Labor History December 30, 1903: A fire at the Iroquois Theater in Chicago, Illinois killed at least 605 people. It was the deadliest theater fire and the deadliest single-building fire in U.S. history. The owners advertised the building as being "Absolutely Fireproof." However, a Chicago Fire Department captain made an unofficial tour of the theater just prior to the official opening. He noted that there were no sprinklers, alarms, telephones, or water connections. He pointed out the deficiencies to the theater's fire warden, who told him that he would be fired if he brought the matter up with the syndicate which owned the theatre.

Thanks @urbanmicrofarmer, great to see this happening
I'd love to see more #rematriation of culture and repatriation of lands for the #Oneida Nation and others back here in New York. Perhaps a topic of future posts...
From your avatar I assume you have an interest in indigenous corn... Dr. Jane Mt. Pleasant (#Tuscarora), who I mention in my post, wrote this freely accessible book on #Iroquois Corn (made available through my collection building efforts while at Cornell):
