A great lite comedy. It's a pleasure to see Isabelle Hupert running around being in three different scenarios in a deserted coastal town in Korea. Hong finds humor in repetitions in slightly different situations and awkward exchanges in English. As always with any Hong movies, it all comes down to excessive smoking and getting shitfaced on copious amount of Soju. And it's true. All Korean men are animals with only one thing in their minds. #ClaireDenis goes back to the colonial Africa & tells a story of a coffee plantation owned by a white family caught in civil war. Maria Vial, a matron of the family is perhaps a clueless, arrogant white woman, as she tries to hire fleeing locals to finish coffee harvest, oblivious to total chaos around her. It's her ingrained sense of entitlement that makes her a curio as she refuses to leave & calling other whites undeserving of the beautiful land. We are in the Denis territory and there are some amazingly blissful sequences- Maria riding a motorcycle on the dirt road, piles of child soldiers all doped up with pills & junk food spread out in the Vial house... #IsabelleHuppert’s glaring whiteness is used well against the black continent. #WhiteMaterial is not her most abstract film yet Denis still manages to keep the film absorbing and enigmatic without ever being didactic or boring. It's definitely headier and feels more substantial than her other works. It's invigorating.

With each new film, #JoachimTrier and his writing partner #EskilVogt, show what mature, gifted writers they are. Their English language debut, Louder than Bombs, is a finely tuned chamber piece about grief and family dynamics. It is a great American film that brings out nuanced, beautifully drawn, rich characters would give Jonathan Franzen a run for his money. It's an apt title to illustrate the state of internal grief felt by the characters. The film's so beautifully written and acted, I can't find one false note. As Trier and vogt explored before in Reprise, Bombs deals with the consequences of being a talented, driven person. Many fail to balance work and relationship. For Isabelle, her work was like an addiction, no matter how much she kidded herself with the notion of family life. Dense yet lively, touching but not corny, mature and intelligent without being showy, Louder than Bombs is a rare gift of a movie. #louderthanbombs #isabellehuppert #gabrielbyrne #jessieeisenberg

Frederique (Huppert) works at a trout farm in the rural area. She is young & married to an effeminate young man, Galuchat, who grapples with his sexuality and has suicidal tendencies. Frederique is also disgusted by her father and his friend's behavior among village girls- 'taking them to his chalet' has an ugly connotation. It is revealed in constant flashbacks that she belongs to 'carefree girls club' where they perform rituals and swear to each other never give men what they want. Galuchat and Frederique meet an old couple, Rambert and Lou and their friend St. Genis, a rich business man while bowling. Rambert and St. Genis are immediately smitten by Fred. Soon she is rummages through high society and wrecks a havoc. But she never gives men what they want. Lou and Fred bond over their mutual understanding of men's folly.
