The fight started May 2019 when gab announced the fork. But hadn't done anything yet.

July 4th, 2019 is when they launched with federation. *After* that the mass #IsolateGab effort kicked in fast.

Sometime around June *2020* ... gab dropped federation, but we didn't know.

And we learned we won that Dec 2020.

So it took a while.

@tchambers @nexusofprivacy what do you mean #IsolateGab wasn’t a preemptive strike? Are you drawing some distinction here that I’m not seeing? That seems like an ahistorical retelling of how that went

@nexusofprivacy Second suggestion for an addition: I was very involved in the #IsolateGab movement.

I'd add the note that one of the reasons for the full unity there is that it *wasn't* a preemptive strike at defederating.

It was NOT doing a first strike that helped us unify around a full fediverse-wide fediblock once they showed their intent. And even then, prior to the full fediblock, moderation tools helped off one by one cases well protecting our people.

Yes: I was very involved in the #IsolateGab movement back in the day.
But for Gab itself that wasn't a feiblock first strike on the Fediverse side. Gab made clear their policies on hate and moderation they would use on the Fedi.

And if Meta did the same in how they join the Fediverse - that is what we are working to verify if they do and go from there.

@lrhodes Technically there is a brand that predates all the ones mentioned but apparently a lot of people don't know about it because it was rightfully yeeted from the fedi: Pawoo.

Oh and addendum: don't just block Facebook, but also everyone who doesn't block Facebook.

you need to understand masto instances are often small communities run by a single admin. The admin cam choose who to federate with. Its more like a curated feed than just all or nothing. Generally instances defederate from other instances which condone bad behavior aka aholes. Its a feature not a bug. Look into #isolategab for a lesson on when coordinated defederation has literally saved the fediverse. The fediverse is full of small heroes 🥹

@bewildergeist the #mastoadmins have good muscle memory on how to quickly block those instances at scale. See the #isolategab effort and many since.

@MtreeB @eloquence @SazeracLA @parkermolloy just look at #isolategab to see how this plays out. If an instance can’t moderate it’s totally reasonable to wall them off to protect vulnerable people here

Most masto instances create a safe space for LGBTQ community and other communities who suffer constant trauma from articles like that NYT piece, so they just don’t tolerate that kind of behavior. There is a long history here you should check out #isolategab to see how hard it is to preserve the communities we have built. If journa.host is going to create a platform for bullies many instances will make the choice to block them

I was all for the #IsolateGab movement. But... I saw a lot of people here who had varying opinions on how to tackle that situation get pretty thoroughly bulldozed by the prevailing tactic...

@DrLindseyFitzharris @bschillace because the fediverse is made up of many instances, some mastodon based and other not, it will forever remain the property of the people. also, it cannot be overtaken by neo-nazis. when this almost happened, nearly all instances in the fediverse defederated from the large neo-nazi instance. this is what is known as #isolateGab.

@elipariser Not a particular instance, but groups of instances --> See the past #IsolateGab effort... its on hold now until the next threat emerges but it successfully beat back Gab trying to join the Fediverse and drove it off...It also did a preemptive strike on TruthSocial for same.
