This week our Earth's Systems & Sustainability students have been collecting air samples from around . I offered to collect some too, and bags of air are enjoying the train commute from the New South Wales Central Coast.

The samples will be analysed by the students for the greenhouse gas methane. Using isotope analyses, they will identify the sources of the methane in Sydney's air. Will it be leaky city gas infrastructure? Or plumes from industry? Or clean air from offshore?

V nice work w implications for reconstructions by Thejna Tharammal, G. Bala, & Jesse Nusbaumer showing using an isotope-enabled climate simulation, that NE monsoon rains over India can be associated with more negative δ¹⁸O signatures than southwest (summer) monsoon in spite of being associated with *lesser* rainfall amounts. Interesting to note that the match (or lack thereof) with observations suggests that we still have some ways to go to understand the isotopic controls on this system (seasonality/events?):

Intro: Just working out this Mastodon thing. As a geologist by training I’m kind of curious about the name and why you would call a social network after a extinct megafauna? A bit about me - I mostly work on oceans and their link to climate through the carbon cycle. I study plankton and biogeochem of the modern ocean, and sediments and isotopes of dead plankton to study the past. I go to sea on large research vessels. I teach oceanography and climate science at an Aus uni. I’m also a cyclist and love to swim in the ocean and hike in the bush and mountains.

We have a new paper out on a GIANT fossil otter. It was as large as a male lion🦁 & the biggest found yet! The study was led by colleague @CamilleGrohe@twitter.com. show it was NOT aquatic like modern otters and shows that it had a wide ranging diet. bit.ly/LionSizeOtter
