One of the vessels lost in the attack was #italiannavy destroyer Fulmine, a Dardo (2nd Series) class. Closest to Force K she was quickly overwhelmed by the fire of the attacking #royalnavy vessels. She went down fighting. Her survivors were picked up by destroyer Libeccio, but many were killed when Libeccio was sunk the next morning by #submarine HMS Upholder. Only 90 of 267 men lived, her captain dieing of wounds in the water. @histodons @militaryhistory http://rommelsriposte.com/2020/04/16/an-unlucky-group-the-regia-marinas-dardo-series-ii-destroyers/

Isaac Sweers was a Dutch design, of the Callenburgh class. She was towed away to Britain when the Netherlands surrendered in 1940, to be finished in a British yard. She had advanced anti-aircraft fire control systems, and an obviously highly motivated crew. She entered fighting in the #Mediterranean during #operationcrusader when she participated in the destruction of two #italiannavy light cruisers at the battle of Cape Bon on 13 December 1941.

The way interdiction manifested itself was by either pinpoint attacks through @royalnavy@birdsite.james.moody.name surface forces and submarines, or by the #fleetarm and the #RAF from the air, or by battles lasting several days with multiple attacks, as happened in mid-September 1941. F/O Greenhill on this mission would day exactly a month on during an attack on an #italiannavy convoy. @histodons #histodons

As it is #rememberanceday today I want to recall the sacrifice of the men of the #bristolblenheim squadrons of the #RAF in #Malta, who went out day after day against frightening odds.
One such raid happened on 11 October 1941, when two out of six planes were lost with all their crews.

#onthisday in 1940, the #fleetairarm struck the #italiannavy's battle fleet in its anchorage at #taranto. This was a stunning success of a raid, leading to the permanent loss of one of the Italian's fleets modernised #dreadnought BBs (Cavour), and temporary disabling of two more, Duilio and Littorio. What is less well known is that this was the second successful raid by Swordfish against Italian vessels in a shallow anchorage. #ww2 #navalhistory #aviation
