Apparently, whatever Apple is doing to display BSD manual pages is (at least for one MacOS user) seriously screwing up text processing, and some of the macro names are actually coming out in the output.
Here's what the #FreeBSD manual page for fopen(3) actually looks like on a terminal emulator's display, when text processing works.

The thrill of a copy editor suggesting italics and … when your editor took them all away😂

There's a website originally for the other place which converts text to #italics. Not sure if it works on all platforms. I use it for Latin names of plants. Here's Asplenium the name for the Spleenwort genus in: italics, italics+serif, italics+serif+bold

Find it here: https://mothereff.in/twitalics
I've seen a lot of people talking about the pros and cons of allowing QTs here which I don't have a strong position on,
but what I'm thinking is...what about #italics?
That's something I often felt limited by on the birdsite. I've *asterisked* some words as a workaround at times, but it doesn't have quite the same effect.
I've been practicing #calligraphy for about 10 years now and I'd just like to share a progress pic of how my #italics look now compared to how it did about 6 years ago. It's much neater now, and unlike before where I was added flourishes on a whim, I actually have trouble deciding where to put them now 😅 anyway, I'm not sure I'm in the right server and I'm not really all that 'talkative' in social media, but I welcome new friends and acquaintances 🙂

That’s my newly-created website to help you add #𝘣𝘰𝘭𝘥 and #𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘀 to your Facebook posts. (Or vice-versa. 𝙊𝙧 𝙗𝙤𝙩𝙝.) On whatever other social media you use.
Man 𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘷𝘦 it took forever to get this site to work correctly. But now it does.
Now let’s see whether Mastodon blocks it. Facebook did—probably because scam artists on Blogger ran afoul of them. Or maybe Google did; I’ve no idea. Give it a whirl!
Sometimes I like to add #𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘴, #𝗯𝗼𝗹𝗱𝘁𝗲𝘅𝘁, or 𝙗𝙤𝙩𝙝 to my posts. But I grew tired of the websites I was using to #format ’em. Took too long to load, and too many ads.
So I coded my own. (Yep, I can code.) And I don’t mind at all if you use it too. Here ya go: https://uniformatting.blogspot.com/
