@marcan this reminds me how #Linux also was the first #OS to run on #Itanium and how the #GCC is even the best compiler for that architecture - even better than #Intel's own!

But yeah, the only thing that would make @AsahiLinux even faster on #AppleSilicon would be if compiling stuff would be done entirely in RAM wherever possible, leveraging 10x->1000x more IOPS and lower latency.

And people thought the #Itanium was a #DumpsterFire: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3oxrybkd7Mo
@anna @fuchsiii @alilly eeyupp....
The only benefit from #Itanium however was #UEFI, tho I still find it bad #Bloatware compared to #LinuxBoot aka. #NERF...

@alilly it's called #amd64 because "#Intel64" / #EMT64 literally is based iff a #licensing deal with #AMD.
#ix64 refers to the #Itanium architecture that predictably and rightfully flopped!

The Intel #iAPX 432 architecture was the #Itanium of the last century. Beautiful in concept but #compilers hadn’t caught up to it yet.
Anyway I had never actually read a whole lot of documentation on it, but #Bitsavers as always has come to the rescue:

Hoping that this RFC lands in the #Linux kernel.
Goodbye, #Itanium. It was "fun" getting to know you a few decades ago.

I never did an #introduction (well, this is an edit, so I kinda did), so here goes:
• I like #ObjC and am the developer of @ObjFW
• I'm interested in obscure CPU architectures and *enjoy* writing assembly for them (weirdest in my collection are #Itanium, #PARISC and #SH4 🙂)
• I'm into obscure OSes (e.g. #MorphOS)
• I collect retro hardware
• I am a #Matrix advocate (decentralized & federated like Mastodon!)
• I mostly use #Linux and #NetBSD as a daily OS
• I am also a @haiku developer
