The FS Maria S. Merian completed the third and last crossing of the #ITCZ during the campaign MSM 114/2. During ten days, Julia Windmiller and Laura Köhler from the Max Planck Institute of Meteorology and Daria Paul and Lennéa Hayo from the University of Cologne sampled three vertically resolved profiles of the ITCZ with #radiosondes.
News from our scientists Julia Windmiller and Laura Köhler: “Yesterday in the morning at 8 am we turned around for the second time to start our third and last crossing of the #ITCZ. We already measured two very nice profiles to study the inner structure of the ITCZ. To better understand the edges of the #Atlantic ITCZ, we sampled the northern edge tonight.”

Launching radiosondes at 2 am and celebrating incoming rain — welcome to the world of our scientists Julia Windmiller and Laura Köhler!
They are currently on the move with the #ship campaign MSM114/2 on the research vessel Maria S. Merian. In the next days, they will sample profiles of the innertropical convergence zone — the equatorial zone where the trade winds converge.

"...the impacts of these forcings on coupled ocean-atmosphere interactions over the IO highlights the sensitivity of zonal asymmetries and their importance to future changes in tropical precipitation patterns."
