I'm seeing another bloom of "adtech is evil, adblockers rule, fuck every web publisher" discourse. So I decided to go back and boost some of my #AdTech / #AdBlocker toots.

This shit is complicated. This shit is nuanced.There's still an ad-supported #OpenWeb baby to be thrown out with the bathwater. (Full disclosure: my ErosBlog is a tiny part of that baby.)

AdTech is evil. But it can be used fairly.

Web ads do suck. But beans have doubled in price in the last three years. #ItsComplicated

But I'd also have been curious to seen associated pomp - we're paying for it, after all - and would definitely have been keen to the Red Arrows.

@midwesterner the West also gave Russia economic shock therapy in the 1990's which created enough social resentment for a figure like Putin to emerge.

So, as is often the case, #ItsComplicated. The West is not the knight in the shining armor here, and we need to recognize this.

The point is, this is about Ukraine, and we need to make sure Ukrainians are given the agency to deal with this the way they feel they need to.
