Evening on the couch with my partner looking up death-related laws. It's been illegal since ca.1900 to bury bodies in the city, but cremation is also illegal in the city except for federal land (so the Presidio and Fort Mason/Funston, then?). The mortuaries here all seem to drive bodies over to Oakland/Emeryville for cremation. You can't take a body that died within the city out of it for cremation without a permit, but you can bring a body into the city and back out again (heavy traffic on the Richmond bridge, maybe?) Embalming is legal within the city, and since California legalized aquamation effective in 2020 I suppose that's legal too.
