"Illegal fishing poses a serious threat to the environment and is also linked to human rights abuses on board fishing vessels."

New analysis estimates that 17% of fishing is unauthorised or unregulated, with hot spots of activity identified in the western Indian Ocean & southwest Atlantic Ocean.

Many vessels frequently changed identity, possibly to avoid detection. bit.ly/3L8ms8y

Other fish species might circulate around the Atlantic Ocean, passing from North American EEZs to high seas, then to European EEZs. Other species live in the oceans and return to rivers to spawn.

To ensure that species aren't overfished, it's important that catch be counted and documented. It's also important that regulatory frameworks be in place so that nations cooperate and don't overfish stocks, and that those regulatory frameworks are followed.

Hence the issue with fishing.

fishing is any commercial fishing that is illegal, unreported, or unregulated.

Approximately 1/5 of all wild caught fish is IUU.

Around 3 billion people rely on the oceans as their primary source of protein. So, you can see how the disappearance of fish stock would lead to food insecurity. It can also threaten local artisanal fisherfolk which can dramatically threaten their economy.

This economic threat can lead to bad actor solutions, e.g. piracy. 2/x

I took a class this semester on IUU fishing so wanted to do a primer thread and give some further sources.

IUU fishing is a problem at the intersection of maritime law and international law, that isn't on the radar of the general public.

It's also likely to be the cause of conflict because it threatens food security and national security for a number of nations around the globe. 1/x
