This incredible talk is now online for those who weren’t in Seattle for IxDA. Give it a watch! https://vimeo.com/319388683

Fucking incredible stuff from @elizejackson. Design obsession with ‘empathy’ is full of problems #ixd19

Extremely important point.
And it’s something that colloquial application of “Design Thinking” often ignores.

Toolkits to help people to think & collaborate are a great first step But to be effective, people need to acquire the meta skills that underlay their use. These skills get developed through repeated exposure, experience, and coaching over time. Plan for this./ #ixd19 @AMarkdalen

“Here’s another thing when people solve their own problems: they don’t have to do design research— they live with the problem.” @jnd1er@twitter.com #ixd19

Jon’s stories earlier - it wasn’t empathy it was understanding problems and engaging in their stories and letting them tell their stories.
Not saying that we shouldn’t try to understand the issues. We should. But it’s not through the concept of empathy. #IxD19
"I'm not a fan of empathy. I don't know what I'm doing half the time, let alone what someone else is doing." #Ixd19
So it's a resounding conclusion: our methodologies, practices and attitudes do not solve systemic problems. Norman just quoted Victor Papanek, which means we haven't learned a thing since the 60s. But now the stakes are *really* high. #Ixd19

Blind people are much better at designing voice interfaces because they know what it’s like to have something that’s curt and to the point. #IxD19
Why aren't you asking blind people to design your voice UIs? [Paraphrasing Don Norman here on accessibility]. #Ixd19
I love this exchange. Don Norman was a bit of a hero already but now he's a total legend now.

How do you become an old designer? Keep young designers around to tell you when you’re wrong and challenge you because it keeps you nimble. #IxD19

People can make do and create their own solutions if they have enough tools and platforms to do so. People together can do wonderful things. #IxD19
Don Norman basically advising us to think about designing for communities. 'Designers shouldn't design. Communities should design, but we can aide them, give them tools." Something we recognised in our end of life work too. #ixd19
Or groups, or communities.

Not just with Bauhaus, Architecture and Industrial Design are notorious for not always putting people at the center #IxD19

Bauhaus was the beginning of design. But they’re much like Aristotle was the beginning of physics. Yes it was the beginning but it’s really not where we are today. People and usage are not part of the bauhaus curriculum #IxD19
"People are not part of the Bauhaus curriculum." On looking back on 100 years since the Bauhaus. Don Norman - like so much today, feels like ripping up the design handbook, to point out our methodologies are not fit for purpose. #Ixd19
Yes, yes, yes, yes.

If you lack good medical care and you can’t do remote telemedicine because you have no internet you can’t see the medical problems.
It’s neat, it’s elegant, and it’s not the answer. It’ll be useful, but it won’t be the solution.
The real solution is jobs. #IxD19

Climate science has the time problem - anything we do today will take a decade to take effect. How do you tackle that? #IxD19
Don Norman laying down the fundamentals. So good.

If you look at these problems - they don’t have simple cause and effect relationships. Often it can be difficult to find a cause. What if there are many causes? What if there are so many we can draw the diagrams? or they take years to impact? #IxD19
