Als tiener in de sixties speelde hij in de band van #WayneCochranAndTheCCRiders. Maar vanaf de jaren 70 begon hij met les te geven aan de universiteit van Miami, richting bassgitaar, waar hij #PatMetheny ontmoet, samen nemen ze in 1974 het album #Jaco op, dat officieel pas veel later werd uitgebracht. Night Passage (1980) de Weather Report és un disc estrany gravat en viu. Conté Port of Entry, una cancçó composada per Wayne Shorter, on Jaco Pastorius improvisa el millor solo de baix que mai s'hagi creat. És ridícul i increïble que algú fes això en un directe. Encara que ja ho portés pensat de casa. Simplement Jaco és una altra lliga.
