A traditional Jamaican Christmas featured Jonkonnu, a procession of masqueraders who performed in towns and villages. According to Olive Senior’s _A-Z of Jamaican Heritage_, "Jonkunno" may derive from a Ewe word meaning "sorcerer man". Enslaved Africans in Jamaica celebrated it at Christmastime, their main holiday. When done right, the dancing, acting, and drumming produce an uncanny experience.
