January 6 is the Accompong Maroons' New Year, which commemorates the signing of the peace treaty between the Maroons and the British, led by Queen Nanny's brother, Cudjoe, who was a Maroon leader. Today is also his birthday.

My paternal grandmother was proud of her Maroon heritage. So am I.

When my mother had finished shopping, and with the merrymaking at our backs, my father drove through some neighbourhoods, so we could admire the creative ways in which homeowners had decorated their trees, hedges, and houses with twinkling, colourful Christmas lights.
