Today in Labor History August 26, 1913: The Dublin lock-out began, a 5- month strike over terrible living and working conditions, and for union recognition. At the time, some Irish workers were living with 55 people per house. The Infant mortality rate among the poor was 142 per 1,000 births. TB-related deaths were 50% higher than in England or Scotland. The main organizers of the strike were 2 syndicalists, James Larkin and IWW cofounder, James Connolly. Several workers were killed by police and by strikebreakers. Hundreds were injured. WB Yeats’ poem, September 1913, is often viewed as a commentary on the brutality of the strike. Connolly was later executed as a leader of the Easter Rising, in 1916.

2/2 This was the area where recruited the Citizen Army; many of the desperately poor people from this triangle made the core of the 1916 Rising; afterwards, they stood too ready to join the , but the continually told them "We'll ask you when we need you" - they were excluded in the Free State and are now excluded in the Republic

James Connolly (Séamas Ó Conghaile) was born on 5th June 1868 to Irish parents in the Cowgate area of Edinburgh, Scotland, Connolly left school for working life at the age of 11, and became involved in socialist politics in the 1880s.

He was one of the leaders of the Easter Rising of 1916. Following the defeat of the rebels he was taken to Kilmainham Gaol and executed by firing squad for his part in its proceedings.

Sean Matgamna tells the story of how James Connolly, in support of Jim Larkin, led the workers of Dublin in the great Labour War of 1913-14.

Today in Labor History April 24, 1916: The Easter rising began in Dublin. Irish rebels, led by James Connolly and Patrick Pearce, attempted to end British rule and create an independent Ireland. The armed uprising lasted six days. Men and women participated. 485 people died in the fighting, including 143 British soldiers and cops. The rest were mostly Irish civilians. The British ultimately prevailed. They took 3,500 prisoners and sent 1,800 to internment camps. They also executed sixteen of the Rising’s leaders, sparking outrage among the Irish public.

James Connolly was an Irish republican, socialist and union leader. Prior to the Easter Rising, he lived in Scotland and participated in Scottish socialist organizations. After that, he emigrated to the U.S., where he joined the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) and founded the Irish Socialist Federation in New York. In Ireland, he was a leader of the Irish Transport and General Workers’ Union and participated in the Dublin lock-out, one of the largest and most severe labor disputes in Irish history.

As a Socialist I am prepared to do all one man can do to achieve for our motherland her rightful heritage – independence; but if you ask me to abate one jot or tittle of the claims of social justice, in order to conciliate the privileged classes, then I must decline.

Today I saw at a post quoting James Connolly.

Let's be clear. Irish nationalism may have been part of his thought. After all, he threw away his life in a nationalist uprising just one year before the real revolutionary wave kicked off. That was a pity and a terrible dereliction of duty to his class.

But he was also capable of sticking to class positions. In "Let Us Free Ireland!" from 1899 he denounced Irish independence without socialism as exchanging one set of masters for another.

"'Let us free Ireland,' says the patriot who won't touch Socialism. Let us all join together and cr-r-rush the br-r-rutal Saxon. Let us all join together, says he, all classes and creeds. And, says the town worker, after we have crushed the Saxon and freed Ireland, what will we do? Oh, then you can go back to your slums, same as before. Whoop it up for liberty!

"And, says the agricultural workers, after we have freed Ireland, what then? Oh, then you can go scraping around for the landlord's rent or the money-lenders' interest same as before. Whoop it up for liberty!

"After Ireland is free, says the patriot who won't touch socialism, we will protect all classes, and if you won't pay your rent you will be evicted same as now. But the evicting party, under command of the sheriff, will wear green uniforms and the Harp without the Crown, and the warrant turning you out on the roadside will be stamped with the arms of the Irish Republic. Now, isn't that worth fighting for?"

Today in Labor History January 4, 1909: James Larkin founded the ITGWU (Irish Transport and General Workers Union) on this date in Dublin. Many of the original members of the ITGWU came from the socialist movement or from the IWW. Their logo was the Red Hand of Ulster. They were at the center of the syndicalist-led Dublin Lockout in 1913, in which 2 people died and hundreds were injured (mostly police). “September 1913,” one of the most famous of W. B. Yeats' poems, was published during the lock-out. After Larkin left for the U.S. in 1914, James Connolly led the ITGWU until his execution in 1916 for his leadership role in the Easter Rising. Connolly was a founding member of the IWW in the U.S. in 1905.

@Nocta Here's a little history: in 1916, left-wing politics was devastated: important and leftists like , , , , and were killed (Connolly, O'Carroll, Macken, Sheehy Skeffington outright, Patridge as a result of Bright's Disease made worse by imprisonment) or crushed by imprisonment etc like Markievicz and Molony 1/2

Visited the James Connolly Centre in Blefast today. Thoroughly enjoyed having a look at the various artefacts from this extraordinary man's life and listening to the guided tour. Spent about two hours there looking around and reading. Highly recommend to anyone who has an interest in Irish history.
