@whatthomwatched the title’s got to do with checking it twice, as the police do in the film. That no bad deeds go unpunished. It is a good contrast with few other films with the same Cain novel as source material:

I've been binging on James M Cain & this is a 5-in-1 doozy. Postman always Rings Twice, Double Indemnity, Mildred Pearce...absolute classics. Full of villains who snatch defeat from the jaws of victory...

I did enjoy James M. Cain's The Complete Crime Stories. Lesser known but littered with little gems & free on kindle unlimited. Great book to pick up and put down.

I feel kind of ashamed that it didn't strike me when I was watching #Ossessione recently that #ClaraCalamai starred in both #LuchinoVisconti's adaptation of #JamesMCain's #ThePostmanAlwaysRingsTwice and #DarioArgento's #ProfondoRosso.

James M. Cain’s novels have not always been well treated by Hollywood. They were just too sleazy, but his 1943 classic Double Indemnity is one of the rare exceptions. The 1944 movie version is every bit as good as the book.

And it's a great book. It’s typical Cain. Sleazy people committing sleazy crimes for sleazy reasons. In this case a man and a woman who are equally sleazy.
