Jane Siberry's first, self-titled album is more straight folk, musically, than her next few, but lyrically it was already off-kilter. This song, my favourite, seems to be about...a genie, perhaps? Conjured up by somebody (using magic beads) who then abandoned her in the desert to wait for his return. (Verses are from her POV but if the chorus, above, is from the summoner...) (Also..what are "paper tools"?)

Another Jane Siberry track from CHILD, "Quoi, Ma Voisine, Es-tu Fachée (Neighbour Neighbour)" is, as she describes it in her intro, about two women talking about the arrival of the Messiah and its effect on their shopping.

I also like the point in this song where Rebecca Campbell, the other singer, messes up and slip back into French, but manages to keep going.

Jane Siberry has an excellent 2-CD album, CHILD, that's a recording of a live concert in New York City in 1997.

"What Is This Fragrance Softly Stealing?" is performed by the whole ensemble. I'd never heard this hymn before this album, but I love lines like "What is this Wonder all around us / filling the air with music light! / Shepherds! some Magic here hath found us!"
