Camper Van Beethoven release their debut album, “Telephone Free Landslide Victory”

Thanks to college radio, I heard this album as soon as it came out, and got it the week before school started. They quickly became my favorite band and I’d play this album all the time.

CVB blended all my favorite things into one band. A dead-pan humorous, punk rock attitude, expressed through a multitude of musical styles and influences, including bluegrass and ska (two of my favorites). They were excellent musicians too, playing amazing guitars and several other string instruments like banjo, mandolin, and violin. So much guitar and mandolin shredding!

They do a country-fied version of Black Flag’s “Wasted” ffs! It was a match made in Heaven for this 15 year old kid suburban punk.

The Housemartins release their debut LP, “London 0 Hull 4”

I heard “Happy Hour” on the radio and thought at first it was some Smiths song I hadn’t heard before. So when a friend got this album, I made a copy onto an existing cassette tape by deploying that old trick of placing scotch tape over the top holes of the cassette. This was how we did it back in the day.

OK, so it wasn’t Morrissey, but the band had a cool fashion style for the times, with their cardigans and baggy pants. And listening to the album (and reading the liner notes), you could pick up on their advocacy for a socialist revolution (e.g. “"Don't shoot someone tomorrow/ That you can shoot today.") by way of Jesus and Christianity 🤔

Several hits, including “Sheep” and “Think For A Minute”. But my favorite remains the upbeat, jangly hit “Happy Hour” 👇

R.E.M. release their third LP, “Fables of the Reconstruction”

Up to this point, I’d only listen to R.E.M. if they were on the radio. I liked Radio Free Europe, but couldn’t tell you much more about the band.

But this album includes my favorite R.E.M. song, “Cant Get There From Here”. I think it’s the bassline and jangly, staccato guitar work.

English indie-rockers The Wedding Present release “Hit Parade 1”

In 1992, The Wedding Present released twelve singles – one each month. The A-sides are originals, and the B-sides consist of covers. All twelve singles made the UK Top 30, spawning videos, reviews, TV appearances, etc.

I’d heard several of these singles over the course of the year, but never purchased any of them. Thankfully, these 12 singles were curated into two albums:” Hit Parade 1” and Hit Parade 2 (January 1993). This was my first real introduction to this wonderful band. Been a fan ever since.
