Tears for Fear’s Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith immersed themselves in #Janov becoming advocates and practitioners of primal scream therapy. This was the source material for their first two albums, and in Shout on their second, they all but enacted it. Shout channels alienation and rage in a more direct way than the #NewWave #synthpop awash the airwaves at the time, or their #PostPunk predecessors. Rather than lament or accept their frozen depths, TFF strove to break free to achieve joy. For me this was the moment that synth-based music burst forth with passion, as much weight as guitars could deliver. OK, they actually added guitars, but the driving force was the music; the guitars were just along for the ride.
