The Emissary by Yoko Tawada has quite a sad premise but is still a charming read because of the author's and translator Margaret Mitsutani's unique approach to language and how it changes over time. My latest read for #JanuaryInJapan is Fuminori Nakamura's exquisite The Thief, but it's on dead tree, forcing me to read slowly (I can only physically handle/turn pages in print books for 15-20 minute stretches due to medical issues).
