...forbidden box given to him by the princess and finds himself transformed into an old man. He discovered that 300 years had passed and everyone he once knew were all long dead. In some ways this is a cautionary tale and a reminder about the dangers of tampering with the unseen forces that shape our existence. Web version here: curiousordinary.com/2021/07/ur

Can anyone tell me anything about this doll?

I guess she is a kokeshi, but I've never seen one like her before.

I fell for her as soon as we met, and now she lives next to these Tomoko-Fuse designed origami.

She has a silver bow in her hair, tiny red nose and mouth, and strange, insectile patterns on her dress.

Currently, I don't know her name.

"Shōbu Garden, Meiji Shrine, Tokyo," Hasui Kawase, 1951

Kawase was intent on painting Japan's beauty, not depicting the damage done by the war. The Meiji shrine itself had been destroyed by bombers, but here he depicts the gardens as unspoiled and idyllic. It's also simultaneously modern, as the people here are in modern Western outfits.

From a private collection.

"Relaxing in the Shade," Yamakawa Shuho, c. 1933.

A beautiful little painting; the unusual scalloped edge is a great way of indicating they are in an umbrella's shadow. The style is unmistakably Japanese but it depicts the growing influence of Western fashion in Japanese society.

From the Art Institute of Chicago.
